Scientists from Manipala Academy of Higher Education (India) found that yoga improves the quality of life and functioning of the cardiovascular system in patients with cardiovascular failure. The work is available at: meeting American College of Cardiology in Manila, Philippines.
75 patients with heart failure, aged between 30 and 70, participated in the experiment. They had been receiving the recommended treatment for six months to a year at the start of the study. The decline in cardiac function was mild to moderate.
The patients were divided into two groups. One received supervised yoga therapy and standard medical treatment, while the other received only standard medical treatment. An experienced yoga therapist taught the first group breathing, meditation and relaxation techniques. Each session lasted approximately 60 minutes.
It was observed that endurance, strength and balance levels increased, heart failure symptoms decreased and quality of life increased in participants who practiced yoga.
“This study provides evidence that adding yoga therapy to standard medical treatment for heart failure leads to improvements in left ventricular systolic function and quality of life in patients with heart failure,” the scientists concluded.
