The project consists of harnessing the heat and high temperatures inside the earth to produce electricity and could generate between 50 and 100 megawatts (MW) of equivalent renewable energy for more than 250,000 households. The agreement is being developed for 12 months, during which technical studies, subsurface analysis and structuring of financing sources will be carried out in order to arrive at a proposal for renewable energy generation, which would later lead to the implementation of a pilot at the Caldos division. Geothermal energy is one of the most precious sources of non-conventional renewable energy and Ecopetro is progressing in the study to carry out the installation of a Geothermal pilot plant in the Apiay field, in the department of Meta.

In order to structure the feasibility studies for the development of a geothermal pilot project in the Nereidas Valley, in the Department of Caldas, Ecopetrol, Baker Hughes and the Caldas Hydroelectric Power Plant -CHEC-, of Grupo EPM, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding within the framework of CeraWeek, an annual energy conference that takes place in Houston, Texas.

The geothermal power generation project consists of harnessing the heat and high temperatures inside the earth to produce electricity and could generate between 50 and 100 megawatts (MW) of equivalent renewable energy for more than 250,000 households.

Geothermal power generation is carried out in more than 20 countries, with the United States as the world’s largest producer, followed by Indonesia and the Philippines.

The agreement is being developed for 12 months, during which technical studies, subsurface analysis and structuring of financing sources will be carried out in order to arrive at a proposal for renewable energy generation, which would later lead to the implementation of a pilot at the Caldas division.

Ecopetrol President Felipe Bayón highlighted this alliance, saying that it will make it possible to know the feasibility of carrying out a geothermal project, taking advantage of the strengths of each of the companies in the different links of the value chain, from development in the subsurface to the commercialization of energy.

“The Valle de Nereidas project would allow us to better understand geothermal projects, where Colombia has an interesting potential, as it is a very attractive renewable energy alternative due to its ability to generate energy in a sustainable and reliable way ,” he added.

“Geothermal energy plays an essential role in achieving a sustainable energy mix and reducing emissions. I am delighted to be part of a geothermal project in one of the most important basins in Colombia, together with our partner and customer Ecopetrol, as well as CHEC. We are confident that our geothermal expertise and technology can help Ecopetrol achieve its goal of delivering 900 MW of renewable energy by 2025,” said Lorenzo Simonelli, President and CEO of Baker Hughes.

Santiago Villegas Yepes, General Manager of CHEC, said: “This alliance with Ecopetrol and Baker Hughes is a great opportunity to promote the Valle de Nereidas geothermal project around which CHEC has developed a judicious and rigorous exploration that offers very interesting potential.

Geothermal energy is one of the most precious sources of non-conventional renewable energy and at this time, when the energy transition is a priority for humanity and an opportunity to move towards new development models for Colombia, we hope from the Alliance the interest and commitment from the national government, so that with its support we enable the sustainable use of this resource for the benefit of local communities, the country and the entire planet”.

In addition, Ecopetrol is progressing in the study to carry out the installation of a geothermal pilot plant in the Apiay field, in the department of Meta, which will generate approximately 200 kilowatts (KW) for its own use. The pilot will be carried out using the heat generated by the production fluids in the existing oil wells.
